First Aid

22Jun09

Do you have any medical training? Have you ever done a CPR course? You would be amazed to realize how many people have never done any basic first aid or medical training and faced with a situation they have no idea what to do.

Even if you don’t have children it is so important to know the basics of first aid. If you are witness to an accident or someone collapses near you or falls over and so on, you need to know what to do. Sometimes your instincts will take over but sometimes they do not and the best thing you can do is just wait for the professionals. Well I believe and support the fact that each and every one of us needs to have basic first aid training.

For that reason I think that if you yourself get a basic training and enjoy it and feel that you have an aptitude for it, then you can continue and pass on the valuable information you have gathered to others. I am not talking about a simple band aid on a cut but proper training that teaches you CPR, teaches you what to do when a limb is caught under a fallen object and so on. You can run these courses from your home, on a weekly or biweekly basis. Charge a small amount so that people will come and if you need supplies, this is extra. You can always put together your own first aid kits and sell these as well.

This is not a one off job as every 6 months refresher courses should be offered as people forget and also there are new techniques and disciplines to learn. Read up on what you need and set yourself up as a first aider whereby you can teach others, earn some money and also be doing something good for society.

You might think this is strange title for a blog about home jobs, but think about it….. there are many different times of the year when specific food items are relevant and sometimes people just don’t have the time or know how to make these items but you do and could.

What I am talking about is making home made Christmas puddings and mince pies at Christmas time, Easter treats at Easter, Pancakes on Pancake Day and so on. You don’t have to limit the seasonal foods that you offer to one religion or sect. Look at all of the different special days that are celebrated around the world, from St Patrick’s Day in Ireland to Bastille Day in France to American Independence or Thanksgiving in the US. For all of these days there are specific foods that are traditionally eaten.

If you like to cook, you can set yourself up as a supplier of themed foods and traditional foods for those special days. On Thanksgiving Day which is always the last Thursday in November, supply Turkey and cranberry sauce, or just the cranberry sauce. St Patrick’s day is all about green, find all the green foods that you can and make them up and market as a special for St Patrick’s, you can even make green cakes and green cookies. The potential is endless for what you can do and supply. It is best to approach this idea with a website and take orders over the web so at least you have an idea of the sort of quantities you will need. Make some samples well in advance of the date you want to advertise, take photos of them and post them to the web.

As I said the potential for this is endless and as I write this I am getting quite excited myself and might even have a go, I love cooking and for the majority I am good at it, so why not?

Believe it or not you can do loads of market research from the comfort of your own home! There is no need for standing in streets with clipboards and bothering passers by. If you have a computer and a good telephone line there is no reason why you can’t work as a market researcher from home.

Many people scorn market research and don’t understand the need for it, when in fact market research is one of the most important contributing factors to consumer products, services and general life. Without market research companies would not know or understand their customer, they would not know what type of milk 7-10 year olds like to drink, the favored beer for women and who plays online casino games.

If you have a computer at home and the use of a phone then there is no reason why you cant set yourself up as a market researcher, either independently or as part of a group or working for a company. Using the computer and internet you can gather important data using email contact, researching company websites and advertisements. Using the phone you can be in touch with people and ask them pointed questions that actually give an indication of the opinion and preferences of types of people or groups.

Presenting your findings can either be done in table format, through a database or report format. How you present your findings depends on the type of research you are doing and who it is for. If you are working for a company they may have specific ways that they want the research presented where as others may want you to be creative. There are endless possibilities with market research and it is a job that can be done from home and is quite fun as well.

Diet Crazy

24May09

These days diet is on everyone’s minds, the age old expression” you are what you eat” becomes truer with each day. Basically you need to watch your weight and eat the right foods otherwise there can be some very unfortunate circumstances. Training yourself to eat correctly is not always easy but if you do it together with someone else then it is much easier.

Today there are many different websites that can help you to lose weight and watch what you eat, but you have to spend time doing this and it can become more frustrating than watching your weight. A better way is to let someone do it for you. If you are interested in the idea of weight watching then you yourself can set up as an independent weight consultant who can not only advise on what to eat but also track what is the best diet for each of your customers.

By establishing a diet plan and giving them a list of permissible foods and different daily exercises that they can do you can set yourself up as a diet consultant. Not only can you track for them on a regular basis what they are eating but you can put together suggested meal plans for them and also weigh them on a regular basis. You can set up a support group in your home on weekly basis where dieters can come and talk and discuss their issues, fears and hopes. This is a great way to make money as a full time job or on the side and it is something that is interesting and rewarding.

Voluntary Work

17May09

Not all work is about earning money! Sometimes when you do some good for others it can also lead to a chance meeting or being offered a job or opportunities elsewhere.

There is good in each and every one of us, but many people leave it up to others. This should not be the case. If you have time on your hands and even if you don’t, it is a good idea to try and make an effort to help others who are less fortunate than you. Whether it is visiting old people, doing shopping for others, helping out in a community centre, cooking for the elderly, looking after underprivileged children and so on.

There are so many organizations and institutions that are crying out for help. They are short staffed and desperately need any form of help, physical and financial. These sorts of jobs are very flexible and often you can do them from home in your own time and your own hours. Voluntary jobs are not only good for the organization that you are working for but they are also good for you and your soul. You learn to appreciate much more what you have and get to see what the real world is like.

I have heard of many people that start out as volunteers in organizations and end up with paid full time jobs because they were so good and their particular talents were needed. So don’t be stand offish about volunteering and do something for you and your community today.

Drama

11May09

Every one of us has some type of exhibitionism in them. At some time or another we like to show off, sing, dance or generally perform. Only those of us who are really talented get a chance to be on stage but that does not mean that others cannot.

If you think you are good at controlling people and have a critical eye for any kind of performance then why not try and set up some home drama or choir sessions. Choose a popular play and invite people to join a drama group where you all read parts of the play and eventually if they are good enough you can arrange a performance at the local community center. Charge a small nominal fee each week for participants to join in which covers any costs you may incur and also leaves you with a small profit.

If you want to be very adventurous you can even film the amateur performance in your home, make it into a little movie and then post it to YouTube. You never know, one of your actors may end up becoming a full blown star after having been spotted on YouTube!

If acting is not your thing, then how about singing? You can set up a choir from your home, have weekly rehearsals and try to arrange a recording or performance at some point. People will be happy to pay a small fee to be part of a choir especially if you try and arrange a recording at the end of it. This sort of idea really plays to the human ego and you might end up having a lot of demand and need to do it more than once a week!

This is a game that can be found in the www.addictingames.com website under the sports section. By the very fact that it is in the sports section it holds a lot of promise and you think that you are entering a great game with lots of action. I was more than a little disappointed at the lack of interesting features to this game.

The game is advertised in such a way that you think you are getting to play a high action fun game with lots of things to do. All it really is, is a penguin on a skateboard and by using the left and right arrows together with the space bar for jumping, you progress down a snowy hill. Along the way you can jump and try and get candy sticks that are placed everywhere. Each candy stick is worth 50 points which gives you some incentive to do better each game.

The music that accompanies the game is very lively and fun and if anything it saves the whole game. As an interlude, this game has plenty of motion but it is not hard action and since you are competing against yourself, it can hardly be thought of as a real sports game. For some, I am sure this game of Penguin Skate is quite fun but for others like me who prefer a bit more of a challenge and or the chance to use some brain power, this game is not one that I will be rushing back to play again.

Sewing Classes

03May09

Are you practical? Can you sew? You would be surprised how many people out there have reached adulthood and don’t even know how to thread a needle and sew on a button let alone darn the socks.

Well if you are a practical person and can do all these things then why don’t you set up a little sewing class for adults that you can run from home? You could offer one to two hours a week in the evening or during the day, whichever time suits you best and teach these impractical adults how to sew. If it goes well then open up the class further and even offer it to teens, men, and kids.

Sewing is not difficult and not considered one of life’s great skills but it is rather an essential skill to have. Think how many people get frustrated when their buttons fall off and they can’t sew them on, their favorite socks have a hole in them or your child’s favorite trousers have been ripped. Why spend money having it fixed when you can fix it yourself? By offering sewing lessons to adults and teens you will be doing a great service to your community. You can even offer basic courses and more advanced courses where you can teach students how to hem or even make garments.

A sewing class in your home requires very little input financially and physically from you. You can end up having classes each day, buying supplies in bulk and making a tidy little profit. Not a bad idea, I think, for teaching a simple skill that many lack.

Data Entry

26Apr09

It is incredible to think that just over 2 decades ago, very few people had computers let alone in their homes. Today practically every household has at least one home computer if not more. We live for our computers and some of us find it difficult when we are without them.

Computers are our link to the outside world. Everything can be found through the internet. But if you think about it, all the information does not magically jump into the computer. Someone has to sit down and methodically put in the information. Whether it is articles that are written about specific subjects, facts and figures, pictures, surveys or whatever, companies need workers to sit down at computes and put in the information.

There are many different types of data entry that a person can do, from numbers to photos, informative to one word. Data entry is very simple but it does involve a clear head and accuracy. Data entry is something that you can do from home, choose the hours that you are available and bill a company for hours or quantity of work. Be aware when you are looking at data entry jobs that there are some scams out there. Never give money even a small amount to an online company even if they promise that it will be repaid. No job online is real if you are asked to pay for it.

Choosing the right data entry job for you can also depend on your level of skill and interests. So look carefully at what is involved and don’t commit until you are sure you can do the job and you can do it for a substantial period of time. Data entry can be quite profitable for you if you find the right job.

Job Scams

19Apr09

I think when I first started writing this blog about working from home, I mentioned all of the scams that there are around but I do feel the need to talk about it again. Despite the fact that we live in such an open society many of us are still very naive and are happy to believe anything we hear especially if it is put in a positive light.

How many times have you read about these get rich schemes where all you have to do is put in $20 and the money will start working for you? DONT BELEIVE IT! If you have to pay to make money then it can’t be for real. That is not so say there aren’t some legitimate schemes which you can join and they do cost money and they do help you, but these are very few. Just remember anyone can make up a recommendation and convince you that it really works, the power of words is very strong.

If you are interested in a job opportunity from home and it sounds very realistic, you should not have to pay for it. The only sorts of things you have to pay for are to join employment sites or when you want to buy a help package to write business plans or something like that. Buying into a job is a waste of money and can end up causing you more harm than not. These scam-mongers often take your money or credit card details and use it for other things also. So please think very carefully before you pay to get a job.
