To work at home, no matter what area you decide to work in can be lonely. You also need to set yourself some personal goals otherwise it is very easy to end up doing nothing all day long.

Working at home for some is very difficult especially if you are not very self disciplined. If you set yourself some personal goals for each day then you are more likely to stay on top of the work you have and also be happier with yourself. It is very easy to get distracted when at home, there is the television, washing, food and of course the internet. More often than not you are your own boss also, so there is no one breathing down your neck making sure you get a certain amount of work done. If you are totally independent and work freelance this is even more the case. It can be very easy to slack off and go and do something else rather than finish what you are doing.

For all these reasons you need to be very motivated and disciplined when working from home. Set yourself daily targets that need to be reached and if you do more than your target reward yourself. The reward can be an extra break or going out to meet friends for coffee and so on. Far too many of us kid ourselves that by leaving something for the next day it will get done, but then you are setting up a carry over syndrome for yourself and nothing really gets done. Working from home has many advantages and is good for some people but others need the influence of co-workers or bosses to help them get on with their work. If you are one of these people then maybe ask a friend or colleague to check up on your progress. Or you can create a progress chart for yourself so you are always aware of where you are and how much work you have done and how much there still is to do.

Working at home can be very beneficial if approached with the right attitude. Don’t believe that by working at home you are able to slack off. Sometimes the work is even harder and requires more motivation and discipline. But in the end it is worth it and you will reap the benefits.
