Animal Housing

12Apr09

Are you a pet lover? Do you have some space in your home to accommodate domestic animals? Well why not offer your services as a pet lodge?

Many people who have pets would love to go away more often but just don’t take the opportunity as they have their pets to think about. The kennels are too expensive and the neighbors don’t like taking the rabbit, which leaves them no choice but to either take the pets with them or not go away. There aren’t many holiday places that allow pets and are happy to have them roaming around the grounds which really restricts pet owners as to where they can go.

By offering a pet boarding house service, you are providing a breath of fresh air to many pet owners. If you love animals it also provides a great outlet for you not to mention also good company. Make sure you set yourself up correctly and have all the neccessary equipment, toys, and even closed in areas for the pets. Check out what sort of insurance is needed and also make sure your neighbors don’t mind as they might be a bit unhappy about the dogs crying all night!

It is also important to have a vet locally who you know you can rely on if you need him for any emergency. Make sure all of the pets you agree to take have had their up to date vaccinations and that you are aware of any medical issues or unusual habits they have. Always have emergency numbers so that you can contact the owners. Looking after a number of pets at one time is quite a hard task so you may need to employ some teenagers to help you. However you decide to approach it, setting up a pet boarding house can be very rewarding, emotionally and financially especially if you have a love of animals.

Are you married? Did you arrange the wedding yourself or did you get help? Getting married can be one of the most stressful experiences for a young couple to go through. It is not easy to plan a wedding and also have both families demanding certain things while you and your partner want something completely different.

If you have the experience of planning a wedding behind you, there is no reason why you can’t help others. You know where to look for venues, where to look for churches or synagogues or even local registry offices. What music to use, the color schemes and so on. Put your experience to good use and become a wedding organizer or planner. This is a perfect job that you can do from home.

Setting yourself up as a wedding planner and organizer is very simple. By using the resources that you already have and know about you can help alleviate a lot of the stress that young couples go through. Start with stocking up on a few bridal magazines, that always looks good. Then get some of the wedding venues in your local area to give you brochures, a visit always helps as you can talk from personal experience. Make lists of all of the things that have to be thought about or arranged for a wedding, from the clothes to the photographer, the venue to the cars to bring the bride and groom and so on. You can do all your research from the comfort of your own home and offer to consult from your home with occasional visits to potential venues.

Many people just don’t have the time to start planning a wedding, getting quotes and sorting through all that is needed so they are happy to use the services of someone else who has experience. And the best aspect of being a wedding consultant is as the end of the job you get to take part in the big party!

Have the kids left home? Are you left with some spare bedrooms and are even rather lonely? Is your partner out all day long and you just don’t want to go out to work anymore? Do you love meeting different types of people?

Well have you thought of opening up your spare rooms as a bed and breakfast? Not only will you get to meet a wide range of people that are interesting, entertaining or may even be a bit odd but you also get to do something for others. You can get up early and make gourmet breakfasts, plan local tours of the area you live in and even offer to accompany your guests. It is so refreshing to meet different people and if you end up earning money from it as well then what could be better.

It does not take much to set up as bed and breakfast, all you need is one or two rooms, make sure you have nice linens and towels for people to use. If your beds are old it might be worth investing in new beds or at least new mattresses. Keep the decor of the room very simple as there is no accounting for taste so the more neutral the decor the better. Make sure there is a lock on the doors so that the guests can get some privacy. If you have en-suite rooms for them the entire better, if not choose rooms that are close to the bathrooms.

Advertise in local papers or with the local tourist board, it should not cost much and you get plenty in return. Set a reasonable rate that will cover all your expenses and leave you a nice profit. It is also very important to set your boundaries before you embark on this business and know what you are prepared to do and what not. Opening up a Bed and Breakfast can end up a being a very profitable and fun thing to do from home.

Loneliness

22Mar09

Working at home can be very lonely if you are doing a job that only involves you and there is no social interaction. You have to be very careful that the loneliness does not get you down or depressed which can also lead to low output and the quality of your work changes.

Make sure you have a set schedule of your work day and set aside regular breaks. In these breaks don’t just sit in front of the television or read a book, do something active. Either go out for a walk, go for a swim to the local pool or find some kind of class with other people that you can join on a regular basis.

I for one was beginning to find working at home very difficult. Not only did I miss the social interaction which comes with an office job but I began to feel that I had nothing to say and no real outside interests. I began to feel boring! So I took up a hobby. At first it was jewelry making where I went to class and learnt how to make different things. I was in the class with other people and really had a good time. It only took up one morning each week, but that was enough to get me out of my lull of boredom and depression.

The next class I took was ceramics and pottery, I made sure there were other people in my class who I had something in common with. I wanted people to talk to and swap ideas and life stories with and I found that. Now I work around my classes and it has given me more inspiration to get on with the work so I have time for my leisure activities.

Do you find it difficult to lose weight? I know I do. Working at home makes it even harder as I tend to nosh on food whenever I am bored or need some inspiration. Well to avoid all my noshing and being bored I took on a new job, I have become a weight consultant.

Not only do I watch what I eat now more and more but I go to other people and weigh them or they come to my house and I weigh them on a regular basis. Even if you are a very private person, this type of tracking of your weight loss really helps. Its not like you have to answer to someone but someone else is keeping a record and graph of how you are doing over time, which in a strange way acts as an incentive to do better.

Because I have set myself up as this weight consultant, I also watch what I eat more and more as of course I am looked at as an example. I charge a rate for 6 or 12 weeks depending on what the client wants and I am also happy to give meal suggestions and even plan a customer’s meal. Not only does this provide a great incentive for me but it also is good company and helps me to earn a little bit more on the side. And of course the best thing is that I am looking better for it and feel great too!

Basements

08Mar09

Have I talked about basements? Well even if I have I think it is time that we discussed basements again. Of course if you live in an apartment block then a basement is not relevant to you unless you do the laundry there. But if you are lucky enough to live in a stand alone house or detached house then a basement is very relevant to you.

A basement is more than just another room in the house. Many people still associate basements with dingy rooms that are full of damp and not well lit. A place that rats live or the old furniture is stored. Well it doesn’t have to be like that. A basement can be the size of the whole of your downstairs, and can offer a few extra rooms to your home. Not only can you use it for guests but it can also be a storage area, a playroom for the kids and even an office.

If you have a way of adding natural light to your basement then do so. Try and put in a skylight or dig around an area to give a little more room and make a door or entrance way down some steps. The worst thing is to be stuck in a basement and feel claustrophobic. When decorating the rooms of a basement, choose light bright colors and no heavy furniture. Make sure everything is airy and even if you don’t have a window put up some nice blinds in one section as a sort of fake window as it will add loads to the atmosphere of the room. Don’t clog the rooms with too much furniture as this will take away from the airiness of the room and try your hardest not to just dump. A basement can be a very warm and cozy place if decorated and looked after appropriately. Anyone who is lucky enough to have that extra space should make sure they look after it!

Do you love shopping? Whether it is for clothes or groceries, toys or home wares? Well why not offer your services as a consultant shopper?

It may sound like a crazy idea for someone who loves to shop but there are many people out there who hate shopping. In fact they hate it with a passion. They can’t be bothered to go around shops choosing what they need and are quite happy to let someone else do it for them or at least take them around and help them decide.

It is not a demeaning job at all; in fact you can make it quite fun. You get to spend someone else’s money and on top of it you are being paid to do so. If it is clothes then you can offer the service of choosing clothes, bringing them to the clients house and if they are not suitable or don’t fit, taking them back to the store again.

For groceries, you can ask for a list of items or even better for a list of the different dishes and basics that are needed over a given time and you choose the groceries that are needed to make the dishes and which brands of each. As for home wares, pay a visit to the client’s home and walk around with them to see what sort of things they are looking for whether it is a particular piece of furniture or some new linens. You can then go to the shops and have fun choosing the items.

Basically you can set yourself up as a personal shopper but from home. When you get more established and have chosen a niche area, you can even set up an office from home where clients can come and watch videos and get ideas of what they want. The area is relatively untapped and has plenty of potential for expansion if you have the initiative and some good ideas.

Recently I applied to a course in ceramics. It sounded very interesting and different. The lady running the course had set up a studio in her back room. Initially making plates and other ceramic items had been a hobby of hers and from that she developed a thriving business all from the comfort of her own home.

This lady, just like me had taken an interest in making pottery and ceramic dishes. She never considered herself as an entrepreneur or particularly creative but after doing a small course in pottery developed a love for it. She decided to give up her day time job and apprenticed herself to a well known pottery maker who had a studio in one of the big cities. She stayed there for over a year learning all of the tricks and methods to make pottery decorate and glaze.

Eventually after having been pushed into it by her husband, they took a bank loan and built a studio in their own home. She equipped the studio with modern pottery equipment from a roller that rolls the clay automatically, to an oven that bakes the clay items over a 17 hour period. She was ready to start her business.

At first she only offered to make hand made items by order for people who were interested and then she realized the potential that was available for teaching. She advertised her first workshop and it was booked up within a day. Since then she has not looked back. All workshops are advertised to include everything; materials, and tuition, ideas and so on. It is a great workshop to do, easy thanks to the great tuition and also very rewarding. You always come away with something you have made and the lady in question enjoys herself immensely while making money.

If you have a hobby that you think others would like to learn, it is worth thinking about opening a business or workshop from home for others to join in and learn with you.

Beware is all that I can say when you hear someone mention multi level marketing or as it used to be known – pyramid marketing. If a friend or acquaintance of yours invites you over to hear about their new business venture, just make sure you are alert and don’t get roped into something that you cannot carry through or afford.

I don’t mean to be so negative about multilevel marketing as I have heard and seen for myself many success stories but it is not something you should jump into naively. Multi level marketing at the end of the day is about believing in your product and knowing how to sell whether it is a service or a physical product. The way it works is through a hierarchy. At the top someone sells you an idea and you like it, whether you have to buy into the product or just sell on to get your commission or earnings depends on the type of product that is on offer.

Usually there is some kind of investment in the product and then you are promised a percentage return on the money you have invested but you have to work for it. You will need to hold parlor meetings invite friends and acquaintances to sample and get to know your product. But for every person that is convinced and invests or joins the program you get a percentage of the earnings that are derived from their membership. Basically instead of going to a retail store, it is through connections that the products are sold.

For some this works wonders but for others, especially if they join the program at a very late stage the potential for enormous earnings is very small. I am very wary of these gimmicks but I have seen try success stories so all that I am saying is check into it very carefully before you commit to taking it on.

It seems that everyone who has had or has anything to do with the school systems today wherever you are in the world has something to complain about. Unfortunately we all say that the schools are not like they used to be and only seem to be getting worse.

If you have patience and an understanding of a particular subject there is no reason why you can’t set yourself up as a teacher from home. I am not talking about home schooling as that is quite difficult and demands many hours of input and patience. But more I am talking about choosing a particular subject and offering introductory lessons or back up lessons for what the child should be getting in school.

If for example you live in a country where the first language is not English, many parents still want their children to learn English from an early age so you can set yourself up as an English teacher teaching letters and then joining them into words and in the end teaching a child to read. If you are artistic you can offer after school activities teaching different forms of art or creative crafts. There are numerous subjects that you can choose or even offer your services as a tutor in general school subjects to make up for what is missing in the current curriculum.

Yes there are plenty of tutors available but unfortunately there is a big demand for them so there will always be work for you as a tutor and you can demand high prices the more popular you get.
